There are millions of prescription drugs and medication on the market these days. But sometimes the side effects of these pills are worse than the reason you are taking them in the first place. These are some of the weirdest medication side effects.

Rotten Mouth

Tetracycline has been used for fighting bacteria for decades. It’s so powerful that it has found its way as an acne treatment in teens. After a few decades, doctors started noticing that while it did get rid of acne, it also caused discoloration in teeth. The chemical reaction that causes the discoloration happens inside of the tooth, and if the acne treatment is continued, the teeth can go from yellow to a brown, or grey hue. The most effective way to treat the tetracycline stained smile is to replace them with porcelain veneers.

Vanishing Fingerptints

In 2009, a man was stopped at the airport when his fingerprints couldn’t be recorded. It turned out that his cancer medication was causing his fingerprints to vanish. The cancer treatment drug Capecitabine is known to cause swelling in the hands and feet, called hand-foot syndrome. This syndrome can also cause the skin to peel and cause blisters. Though it is rare, this can affect someone’s fingerprints, but after stopping the medication, your fingerprints will go back to normal.

Blue Urine

Hypotension is when someone has abnormally low blood pressure. But your blood pressure is sure to soar when you notice that the blue in the toilet isn’t from your toilet cleaner. There are medications used to treat hypotension that contain methylene blue, and this substance is known to turn urine blue. It’s more likely that the methylene blue will cause your urine to be more of a green when eliminated. Reaching a true blue isn’t as common, but is totally possible.

Bye Bye Blue Eyes

People with light eyes usually have a low amount of melanin in their irises. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin, hair, and eyes their colour. So when glaucoma patients with light eyes take the prescription Xalatan it may change their baby blues into brown. Xalatan can cause the eyes to produce more melanin, which causes them to have more pigment in their irises, therefore changing them to brown. What is worse is that the discoloration can be irreversible.

Anal Seepage

If you’re trying to lose weight, then having a medication that doesn’t allow you to absorb fat sounds like a dream. In this case the side effects can be a complete nightmare. Alli is the dream drug and the side effects include gas with oily discharge, loose stool, and “more frequent stools that can be hard to control”.

Compulsive Behavior

Restless Legs Syndrome can be a crippling mental disorder. Sufferers find that it’s hard to get a good night sleep, and have even been known to kick their partners while struggling with the disorder. Many RLS patients have been prescribed, Mirapex, which is a drug used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Though the drug did help them with their RLS symptoms, users found that they suddenly had gambling addictions, increased sex drive, or food and drug addictions. Anyone with these side effects should report them to their physicians immediately.

Black Stool

So you’re suffering from nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, and diarrhea then go ahead and grab your Pepto Bismol. But have you ever noticed that a few hours later your tongue or stool appear black? This happens when the bismuth from the medication reacts with sulphur and saliva in the stomach and form bismuth sulphide. How scientific. Fortunately, the side effect is only temporary and harmless.

Man Boobs

Men have been combating baldness for 100’s of years, out what if you had to choose between no hair and having man boobs? The hair loss medication Propecia can cause male patients to grow breasts that can actually produce milk, a condition called gynecomastia. There have been many lawsuits against this medication because of the man boobs side effects, and the failure of the medication manufacturers to properly label the medication.

Furry Tongue

Not only does this medication leave a bad taste in your mouth, but it can also hinder your sense of taste altogether. Prednisone is a drug used to treat cancer and has had several complaints of causing oral thrush. Oral thrush, which is basically a yeast infection, can cause your tongue to feel furry, sore, and white in colour. It can also cause you to lose your sense of taste and causes cracks around the mouth. As if cancer patients didn’t have enough to worry about.

Raging Bull

The depression medication Zoloft can be very effect and sometimes it makes male users appear very happy down there. Much like Viagra, Zoloft warns of “persistent and painful erections”. The only difference here is that you may not actually have the happy ending associated with Viagra. Zoloft also warns that “ejaculation failure“ is another side effect of the drug. That means you will be walking around with a rager and no way to make it go away.
